Not many players have brought as much drama to football as Randy Moss. Luckily for him, he had a few breaks in this regard. First of all, Chad Johnson – now known as Chad Ochocinco – and Terrell Owens were in the league at the same time. That took some of the media attention off. Secondly, Moss was lucky enough to draw interest from the Patriots. At the same time, the Patriots were the reason for his demise.
What football fans have to understand is that the Patriots aren’t about loyalty; they’re about using people to get where they want to go. Once your skills have diminished, you’re history. When the Patriots let Moss go, it was an indication that something wasn’t right with this once standout receiver. He still managed to produce, but not nearly at the level he had in the past.
In 2010, Randy Moss played on three teams – Patriots, Vikings and Titans. Combined, he had 50 catches for 706 yards and 10 TDs. That’s actually impressive. The only problem is that Moss set the bar too high for himself. They’re simply not Moss-type numbers. Teams also have to figure in that Moss begins to mope if he’s not getting the ball, which has the potential to drag the whole team down.
Moss stated that he would only come out of retirement for the Patriots. The Patriots are not interested. The only way the Patriots would be interested is if someone got hurt and they were in a desperate situation, but it wouldn’t work out. Moss needs to stay in shape and get reps. That said, if another team looks like a Super Bowl contender and calls Moss for receiver help, don’t be surprised if Moss accepts. Playing for the Patriots would be nice, but he’d love nothing more than to go further than his former team, the team that kicked him to the curb.
